Our Story

From the bookshop's family home to a boutique hotel

Connected to the much-loved Taprobane Book Shop — a quiet landmark for Colombo's readers, collectors and curious travellers — stood a house. It was home to the bookshop's owners, the Subasinghe family.

In 2023, that house opened its doors as Taprobane House — a four-star boutique hotel that carries the bookshop's spirit of discovery, and the warmth of a family home, into every room.

Taprobane is the name by which the ancient Greek geographers knew Sri Lanka. We chose to keep it — a reminder that this island has welcomed travellers for more than two thousand years.

The Architecture

The house is a tribute to Geoffrey Bawa's Tropical Modernism, translated for contemporary island living. Timber louvred screens filter the afternoon sun, double-height volumes draw the sea breeze through, and open terraces carry the house up to the rooftop — so that the line between inside and outside quietly disappears.

The Subasinghe Family

Four generations of Sri Lankan enterprise

For four generations, the Subasinghe family has been woven into the commercial life of Sri Lanka — building enterprises founded on trust, integrity and an enduring sense of responsibility to the communities they serve.

The house beside the Taprobane Book Shop was where the family lived. Today it is the work of the fourth generation — an act of stewardship as much as hospitality, honouring a family name and a much-loved bookshop by opening the family's own home to the world.
